Black Pelican Oceanfront Restaurant: Located directly across from the beach at Mile Post 4 in Kitty Hawk! Black Pelican originally served as historic Lifesaving Station # 6 which was constructed in 1874. Station #6 and its crew served to provide aid for boats and their crews that were stranded along the oceanfront. The building also served as an active weather bureau. The Wright Brothers used information garnered by the weather bureau to plan their experimental flights. In 1903, after their successful First Flight, the Wright Brothers sent the telegraph announcement from Station # 6.

Black Pelican serves lunch and dinner daily. In addition to our menu, we serve delicious lunch and dinner specials. Fresh seafood, steaks, vegetarian dishes, sandwiches and wood oven pizzas are some of the items offered on our menu. The Black Pelican also has a menu designed just for kids. We have comfortable dining rooms that will accommodate dinner for two or 22. Lunch and dinner are served at our full-service bar, along with some local color.

Our waitress Barbara was very welcoming and delivered our food and drinks quickly. I had the Portabello Mushrooms (vegetarian), which was absolutely delicious. My friend had the cheese pizza and expressed, “it was flavourful but not overly acidic.” To finish, we had scrumptious creme brulee! We both left feeling overly full but thoroughly happy.(If I lived closer, I would be back regularly, and keen to try the other desserts!)

This should have been a five star review. We were a party of 18 and only had a single waitress, but she was the BEST waitress ever. No complaints, only good stuff to day about her. The food was very good, but not the best I ever had. Still worth the trip and the long wait time. The problem with our experience as you can see from my picture, is the grease dripping from the exhaust fans in the parking lot below. Not only is this a hazard in the parking lot, but I have to assume this would be a fire hazard in the kitchen as well as the rest of the restaurant. Back to the parking lot, my little nephew walked through the grease not knowing what it was, fell down, and ruin the outfit he was wearing. I tried to bring it to the attention of the manager and they never came out to speak to me. For that reason alone I cannot return to this restaurant.

Great food, great service, great view of the ocean from the upstairs dining area.I got the spicy shrimp and grits and it was fantastic! It had a great level of heat (might be too hot for some), flavors went well together. The shrimp was slightly overcooked but the rest of the dusk was so good I could overlook that.My wife got snow crab legs and they were very good. They were cooked perfectly.We always enjoy going to Black Pelican!

We've eaten here several times and the food is always good. I would have given five stars but the survivals were not available yet even though we called to ask when dinner is served. I include specials with dinner. The other thing that was a downer was skin under the breading in my fried flounder. Never had that before. Trout, yes. Salmon even occasionally. The crab dip with tortillas is awesome. Could use more chips but that's ok. Prices are inline with everything else today. We will eat here again.

Wow! What an fabulous find in Kitty Hawk! This historical lifesaving station is full of photos and OBX history. I love that they have preserved the history all while offering an awesome selection of delicious local fare! We had the crab and artichoke dip appetizer and clam bake for two. The dip was fabulous and the clam bake was the best I've ever had! Not just corn and potatoes, but super fresh broccoli, carrots and squash too! The bucket was chock full and we couldn't even finish it all. The best part of this place was the people. Our server Stefan was awesome! He was fast and friendly and offered good recommendations! The lady at the gift shop was also very friendly and helpful. It's so nice to see people still enjoying their job! No disappointments here. We'll visit again when we come back to the OBX!

Tried this place while we were out of town and I was not disappointed! My husband was... but I learned a long time ago to never order crab dip (it was basically a cheese spread) or any meal that has the crab meat "already in it". It's crab leg or no crab for me! Those two dishes aside, the ambiance of the restaurant was great, the server was sweet and attentive, and I loved my meal. If we travel that way again I'll be back!
