Almost empty restaurant and a food hall atmosphere. Friends were hyped about this place and brought us so we expected some excellent food.
Pros: Crabby Mary! Crazy, salty, „extra“ cocktail.
Cons: food was Ok. Rather bland and overcooked, and everything was deep fried and tasted like it comes out of the freezer.
Other people’s food on other tables looked good, so maybe we just ordered wrong.
Service was OK, all in all nothing to write home about. (Except for the Crabby Mary! 😉)
Food came out in waves which is ok with such a large group. Only messed up 1 or 2 orders and they were small things like fries instead of something else.
Again, no help cashing out but our waitress once again kicked butt and got everyone taken care of quickly. The only reason I’d go back is to high five her and throw her some more money cause she did great.
We ordered the clam chowder bowl, kids chicken tender basket, flounder and shrimp plate, and two 1/2 orders of snow crab with the boil. My families food arrived after waiting for about 40 minutes. They all were satisfied with the flavor of their food. Myself and my child weren’t served our crab leg meals until my family was finished eating their entire meal. Four of our members had already left the restaurant while we were still eating. We also weren’t provided and drink refills until most of our food was already eaten.
Our server was very nice, but seemed to be overwhelmed with the tables she was taking care of. We were then offered two free desserts for “waiting so long”. I then asked for a discount instead of the desserts since we already had cake waiting. We did receive a 15% discount for the issue which was about half the price of one crab leg meal. This was disappointing due to the fact that mine and my daughter’s food consisted of over half the price of our bill, and we weren’t even able to enjoy our meal with our family.
Overall, too pricy and poor service. Will not be returning.
Partner got a funny shirt, of course.
Oysters were fresh and pretty good, only a touch of grit on a few.
My grilled mahi tacos were better once I pulled off most of the half pound of cheese (it seemed) on each one.
Beans and rice were better with more hot sauce.
Partner enjoyed his crab melt and said it was very hot when it arrived. He also really liked the hush puppies.
After the full wait at 6;30 we were let into the dining room and there were at least 13+ OPEN TABLES! A quarter of the restuarant was empty!
So Richard, why the wait?
I had the broiled platter, most everything was good ... shrimp, scallop and crab cake. The fish was mushy and the sides not seasoned.
The fried Gator bites, awesome. No notes.
The gumbo, a strong and confusing medley of flavors. It was almost below my tolerance for what I'll swallow.
Another member got the shrimp and grits, with chicken substituted for shrimp. Chicken was rather tough, and I really couldn't decide if I liked the sauce or not. It almost tasted like it was made with beer? Not a good flavor profile for the dish, and I actually left it behind, something I never do.
I also had a cesar salad, something I know I love. There was so much sauce, and it was so rich, It was overwhelming, and I wish I had less sauce and more leaf.
Finally, and sadly, the key lime pie we got to go was... lackluster? It was topped with coolwhip, and altogether tasted not like key lime pie, only hints of lime.
We paid so much for a mediocre experience. I wouldn't mind if it was one bad dish, or if it was cheap. But there was a lot not to like here I'm sorry to say.
Honestly, there are so many good places to eat around the OBX, don't take chances here.
Advertised chicken nuggets. brought kids chicken planks. Restaurant seems ran by kids-the whole kitchen filled with younger kids passing around a vape pen. Ordered a mudslide, got a white russian.
My wife reported that the key lime pie was the best she’d ever eaten.
This is a chain with local items on the menu and it’s way better than most such. Good service as well—prompt and pleasant.
the coconut shrimp was delicious, along with the jalapeño honey sauce!
our server was Ivan and he was very sweet and attentive, poor guy was swamped with a table of 15+ on the fourth of july and it was his first day on the floor since he normally works in the kitchen
That said, they have the best hush puppies I've ever had, and the quality of the seafood is pretty good. I wish they could bring back all you can eat crab, then I'd consider coming back.
Our stroller dimensions: 35.5 Inches (L) x 25.75 Inches (W)
The drinks were awful, but I don’t believe that is the reason people go there, so I am not giving them the 3 stars I would have normally awarded for what my experience was.
The food was tasty, the drinks were amazing!
More of a drink selection here!
This evening my family and I arrived at your restaurant at 6:50. We walked in and politely waited as the hostess was on the phone. While waiting we grabbed menus as we have heard amazing reviews from our family & friends about the quality of customer service as well as the food. The hostess hung up the phone, my husband asked “is this the front door?” as we had been standing there for awhile without any greeting. As she walked out the door and another gentleman and his party entered the restaurant, through the same doors, the hostess grabbed menus and stated “your table is ready!”
Upon her return, I was quite perplexed, but my family & I waited patiently to be greeted to no avail. I looked at my husband to ask if the hostess had greeted him, he responded no. I walked over to the hostess to ask if we needed to call in to book a reservations. She stated “no!”
Then my husband asked if we could be seated.
“She then asked how many were in our party?”
I’ve never felt so unseen. We frequent Hatteras as we own a time share and visit frequently to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We were looking forward to adding an amazing review and telling our friends we shared the same amazing experience. Unfortunately, I was left feeling baffled!
Avon, NC
Update:
While the customer service wasn’t welcoming, the positive out of this unpleasant experience was we had the opportunity to go to a locally owned and operated restaurant called COCKEYED CLAM. The food & staff were absolutely amazing! And only seven minutes down the road. Always find the rainbow!
Editing to say our waiter was really nice despite the issues.
Broiled seafood platter was one small piece of flounder, 4 shrimp, potatoes, 3 scallops and a large crab cake. The best thing on the plate was the crab cake. The gumbo was dry and the red beans and rice was the gumbo with red beans on top.
The ceiling was dirty, our waiter acted like he had better places to be.
